Composer, pianist, and bandleader Omar Sosa brought his Quarteto Americanos to the legendary Jazz Showcase in Chicago for a fabulous weekend of music from September 22-25, 2022. Always entertaining, Sosa brings jazz infused with his Afro-Cuban roots and Latin jazz rhythms that makes his show one not to be missed.
Nominated for seven GRAMMY awards, twice for the BBC World Music Awards, recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian, and recipient of the Afro-Caribbean Jazz Album of the Year award from the Jazz Journalists Association in NYC, Sosa exemplifies contemporary global jazz fused with a wide range of world music, hip-hop, and electronic elements. In addition to this joyous music, his energy and enthusiasm made for an exhilarating night for the standing-room audiences who came out to see him in Chicago. I've seen Sosa several times, each time with a different band, and he's always amazing. He's always moving, on the piano bench, standing, arms flying, just a bundle of energy.
The quartet seamlessly blended the talents of Sheldon Brown on both Tenor and soprano saxophone, drummer Josh Jones and masterful bassist Ernesto Mazar Kindelán, along with Sosa on piano and keyboards.
Among his influences, Omar cites traditional Afro-Cuban music, European classical composers (including Chopin, Bartok, and Satie), Monk, Coltrane, Parker, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Chucho Valdés, and the pioneering Cuban jazz group Irakere. With this foundation, it is any wonder why he is on the A-list of must-see jazz performers whenever they are in the area. Sosa delivers a masterful and delightful performance that will leave you uplifted and smiling - and happy that you, too, were a part of this night of great music.
