The Butler men's basketball team opened Big East play with a 63-59 win over the DePaul Blue Demons. The win was the Bulldogs' 4th in a row over the Blue Demons, and 15th out of the 17 the two teams have played since 2014.
Freshman Simas Lukosius led the Bulldog's scoring with 15 points. Two other Bulldogs scored in double digits, with Chuck Harris and Jayden Taylor each scoring 13 points.
Butler shot 53.57% during the first half to take a 36-27 lead into the locker room, led by Lukosius' 13 first-half points. DePaul responded with a 10-2 run during the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half to pull with 3 points. The Bulldogs then put up a 10-1 run of their own to take a 12-point lead. The Blue Demons then slowly chipped away and pulled within 2 points after a Blue Demon 3-pointer with 48 seconds left. A Butler foul with 4 seconds remaining sent DePaul to the line with a chance to tie the game, but only hit 1 of 2 to make the score 60-59. Butler was fouled twice in the final 4 seconds and hit 3 of 4 free throws to seal the 63-59 win.
Butler will NOT be making the New Year's Day trip to UConn, as COVID has forced the host team to cancel. That means Butler's next scheduled game is a home game on Tuesday, January 4, with Seton Hall visiting Hinkle Fieldhouse.
