Mt. Vernon Marauders hosted the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener vs. Greenfield-Central Cougars at Hancock Health Stadium Friday night in Fortville.

Both teams would end up scoring on their opening drives of the game. The Marauders would score on a Brogan 7-yard run. The Cougars, who are a heavy run offense, had big runs from running backs Anderson and Herrell, and Anderson would score with a 6-yard TD run to tie it up.

The Marauders would turn the ball over three times in the first half, including two interceptions and a fumble yet they found themselves with a 14-7 lead.

The last turnover came with 2:45 to go in the half, where the Cougars would start from their own 46. They would end up driving down the field and scoring on a QB scramble from Freeman, who took it 17-yards to the end zone with only 2 seconds remaining to tie the game at the half.

The Cougars carried that momentum out of the half immediately as they took the opening half kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown return from Anderson.

Mt. Vernon would tie the game up again on a 35-yard pass from rookie QB Ertel to Purdue committed receiver Burhenn.

Greenfield-Central would take the lead yet again before the fourth quarter on Zeller's 1-yard run.

The Mt. Vernon Marauders took over the 4th quarter by scoring two touchdowns and keeping the Greenfield-Central Cougars scoreless. The first score came on a 1-yard run from Julian, and the second was another throw from Ertel to Burhenn, who went up to snare the 25-yard pass in the end zone. Both scorning drives were aided by costly penalties by the Cougars, including defensive holding and a personal foul.

The Marauder's defense made a big stop on a 4th down play inside their own territory as lineman Kimberly deflected the pass on the rush.

The Mt. Vernon Marauders have now won 25 straight Hoosier Heritage Conference matchups, including six sectional games against HCC opponents.

Mt. Vernon takes on New Palestine from home next week, while Greenfield-Central is back home to take on Pendleton Heights.
