Butler loses to #22 Xavier 87-72 on Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Xavier’s Adam Kunkel was the star of the game off the bench. Kunkel scored 25 points, shooting 8 for 12 from the field and 4 of 8 behind the 3-point line. Kunkel scored eight points in a row after Butler cut Xavier’s led to 7 in the second half. There was no answer for Kunkel’s performance. Paul Scruggs had 16 points and 6 assist to help drive the Musketeers to victory. Xavier had been on a seventeen-day break, due to COVID issues on their opponents' teams, looked as sharp as ever.

Aaron Thompson led the scoring for Butler with 20 points. Bryce Golden had another solid game scoring 19 points. It just was not enough for Butler who now falls to 8-7 on the season. At one point Butler went on a 7-point scoring run to excite the home crowd, but it just was not enough to overcome the Adam Kunkel show.

Xavier shot 60.7% in the first half. Their lead at halftime was 42-31. Butler went on a run to start the second half that cut their deficit to 46-40. That was as close as they could get as Xavier went on a 5-0 run. One key to the loss for Butler was three-point shooting. Xavier shot 10 of 22 (45.5%) from three-point range while Butler only shot 5 of 21 (23.8%).

Butler will be in the nation's capital on Thursday, January 13, to face Georgetown. This will be the first of three road games for Butler.
