After almost a year of serving as News Editor, it is my duty to inform you this is my final House of Burgess column for NUVO. I'm moving on to a new position starting next week, and I wanted to end my tenure here with a note of appreciation.
I always respond the same way when I receive any feedback to something I've written — be it positive or negative or somewhere in between: Thank you for reading. I mean it. It never ceases to amaze me that a thought will travel through mind, down through my fingers, onto a screen, and is later digested and responded to by countless readers.
If you want to get in touch with me for any reason, I'll still be around. You can email me at email@example.com. I will still have my Facebook and Twitter accounts. And, you can follow along with everything I'm doing at my website. Also, I don't know if you know this, but there's a really great podcast called The Rob Burgess Show you should check out.
Before I sign off, I want to leave you with this thought: Please support local journalism.
NUVO has been there for me in so many ways for so long. First as a reader, and then in 2010 and 2011 as a freelancer, and of course since July 2018 when I was hired as News Editor. If you're reading this, I'm sure you have a story about how NUVO has been a part of your life. Now is the time to take action.
After we switched to a nonprofit membership-based model at the start of March, I, myself, joined NUVO as a member while also continuing to serve as News Editor. If I was going to ask others to become members, I thought it was only fair to put my money where my mouth was. It's only $5 a month, after all.
Now that I'm about to start a new job I've decided I'm going to continue my NUVO membership after I relinquish my title. I made this choice not because anyone's paying me to do so. I'm going to keep my NUVO membership because I believe in it. I want to support the work of my soon-to-be-former colleagues.
Of course, it's partially because I like them, but I also want to express my support for what NUVO has meant to Indianapolis, and what it will mean in the future. I know great things are in store for NUVO, but only if we all make a concerted effort to make it so. It won't happen on its own.
If you don't support institutions like NUVO they won't be there. It's really as simple as that.
